Great carry around camera
This a great all in one carry around camera. I also own the older SX1 and SX40HS, and this camera improves on both.
The SX1 has a 35mm equivalent 24-560mm lens, has great image quality, great video, and shoots RAW files, but the downfall in my view was AA batteries which had a very short useful life (relative to a Lithium Ion battery) and always seemed to die at the wrong moment. There was no battery charge indicator other than an "idiot" light that would flash as the battery died.
Then a few versions later came the SX40HS. Great camera, battery charge indicator, Lithium Ion battery, 35mm equivalent 24-840mm lens, great image quality, great features, great video... but no RAW.
Now we have this little gem the SX50HS which in my view finally completes the picture for the perfect carry around camera with an even longer lens range, battery charge indicator, Lithium Ion battery with remarkable life, great image quality, great video, great features and shoots RAW files!
This camera boasts remarkable image quality from a very small chip. Does it compare to the image quality I get from my 1DS Mark III or 5D Mark III? No. Did I expect it to? No. But for the all the amazing features packed into this camera the bottom line for me is that there are many great images that HAVE been captured because of the portability and range of this camera which might have been missed otherwise, as I don't regularly tote around the 20 - 30 pounds of gear that would be needed to cover this lens range on my full frame DSLRs.

Worth every penny
More than anything else the greatest reason to purchase this camera is for it's zoom capability. The effective 1,200mm photo zoom is breathtaking enough, but if you've got a top-notch tripod and use the full digital zoom to 4.300mm the quality is still incredible! Canon outdid themselves with the zoom on this camera.
The menu system is intuitive to use, as are the controls. I would have preferred a wireless remote especially given the sensitivity of high zoom, but perhaps many other users won't use zoom as much as I do. Color sensitivity of the sensor is excellent. Only things I wish were better or added to this camera is a Bulb setting, as well as a hard copy version of the user guide instead of a pdf guide on CD.
If you're a photo enthusiast and maybe don't want to buy into DSLRs yet but want to take outstanding photos for a reasonable price, then I'd highly recommend this camera.

I had a Pro1 and loved it and I was hoping this would be the replacement. It has in many ways, long lens esp in image quality at hight ISO, and shooting speed. But the the viewfinder which was great in my Pro 1 was usable, and necessary for sports.is useless exp for glasses users ! Love the articulated LCD and it is bright. The controls can be hit inadvertently, and cause problems, but love extra features HDR is good.No pocket manual, no usb or video (for us non hdmi tv users) cables. Would like GPS, and WiFi, But in the next model, please at least a decent viewfinder and time lapse(lots of folks want it now) and live pc connection like my Pro 1!

Satisfied
Overall, I'm happy with my purchase - the camera does what it is intended to do. I am disappointed with not getting a manual to refer to - PDF is nice but doesn't cut it. Including a cable for connecting camera and computer would have been nice too. Just a couple details that keeps me from giving it a 5* rating.
