Genuine Canon HD Video Lens

The Canon name is synonymous with optical excellence. More than seven decades of manufacturing lenses for professional broadcast and photography have given Canon superiority in its optical products, and a legendary reputation among professional videographers and photographers. Every Canon HD Video Lens uses an aspherical lens and low-dispersion glass to achieve low chromatic aberration with high resolution, as well as super spectra coating technology to lower flare and ghosting. A gradation ND system ensures better exposure in bright shooting situations. Select camcorders also feature an iris diaphragm, producing highly expressive shots with sharply focused subjects and beautifully blurred backgrounds.

Canon Full HD CMOS Image Sensor

VIXIA High Definition camcorders have a decided edge thanks to longstanding Canon expertise in the design and manufacture of CMOS Image Sensors. Their superb performance ensures Full HD video that is stunningly lifelike, with brilliant clarity in every detail.

Select VIXIA camcorders feature a 1/3-inch native 1920 x 1080 Canon HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor that incorporates technology proven in Canon's professional-level camcorders. The VIXIA HF G30 uses an increased-area 1/2.84-inch Canon HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor, which has more pixels to accommodate the large zoom on that camcorder. Unlike image sensors found in competitive camcorders, HD CMOS Pro Sensors use fewer pixels, which are significantly larger and more sensitive, resulting in superb low-light performance and a wide dynamic range.

The latest generation HD CMOS Pro Image Sensors found on the VIXIA HF G30 and VIXIA HF G20 feature improvements to the microlenses and color filters, allowing for a 20% increase in light capture at each photodiode. Improvements at each pixel site have resulted in a 20% improved low-light performance*––to capture outstanding detailed video with excellent color reproduction, wide dynamic range and minimal noise, even in dim lighting.

* Compared to the Canon HD CMOS Pro Image Sensor used in Canon's VIXIA HF G10 Camcorder.

Superb Low-Light Performance – Each pixel site is larger and more sensitive to light. This makes it possible to capture high-quality video even in dim lighting.

Wide Dynamic Range – The larger pixel area also enables more light to be stored, making it possible to detect and capture a wider range of tonal values. Both highlights and shadows are thus reproduced more accurately, and skin tones are captured with fine gradation.

Canon DIGIC DV III Image Processors

DIGIC DV Image Processors have long been at the heart of Canon imaging excellence, providing exceptional color and clarity to both video and photos. The DIGIC DV III Image Processor delivers stunningly realistic color reproduction and sophisticated noise reduction for exceptional low-light performance. It is also the high-speed engine that powers a variety of Canon technologies including Smart AUTO, Touch & Track, Genuine Canon Face Detection and Cinema-Look Filters. The latest and most advanced Canon HD Image Processor, the DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor, captures more light for brighter, noise-free images even in dark scenes. Dramatically increased processing power lets you record in both MP4 and AVCHD formats simultaneously, as well as supports the application of technologies such as Cinema-Look Filters and Touch Decoration post capture.

HS System

The VIXIA mini X and the VIXIA mini camcorders feature the amazing Canon HS SYSTEM. Created by combining a High-Sensitivity CMOS sensor and the powerful Canon DIGIC DV 4 Image Processor, the Canon HS SYSTEM gives you the power to create images with spectacular depth and detail. You’ll experience excellent tracking performance even when shooting in low light, and achieve gorgeous still image quality with minimal noise and maximum detail in highlight and shadow areas. On the VIXIA mini X, an Auto Dynamic Range control and new gamma curve settings prevent over- and under-exposure, even when capturing high-contrast images. The Canon HS SYSTEM lets you capture clearer images with reduced noise and blur in a variety of situations for incredible photos and video.

8 Blade Circular Aperture

The VIXIA HF G30 features a newly designed 8-Blade Circular Aperture – a first for a Canon camcorder – for more natural and pleasing “bokeh.” Because the aperture is circular, points of light in out-of-focus areas become circularly blurred, avoiding the “starburst effect” found in camcorders without circular apertures. This gives your video a more dramatic, artistic quality. From nightscapes to winter scenes with falling snow, make sure the background or foreground doesn’t distract from your subject.

Fisheye Lens

The VIXIA mini X and VIXIA mini camcorders are equipped with a genuine Canon f/2.8 fisheye lens, capturing images that are different from conventional camcorders and cameras. The fisheye lens on the camcorder uses two aspherical lenses to achieve low chromatic aberration with high resolution and the image quality Canon is renowned for. The ultra-wide angle lens provides a 160° angle of view for MP4 video and 170° angle of view for still images, allowing the camcorder to capture scenes with you and everything around you; AVCHD recording on the VIXIA mini X is captured with a 150° angle of view. Wide shots have the outer edge perspective typical of a fisheye lens, shooting at a focal length of 16.8mm for MP4 videos and 15.4mm for photos (35mm equivalent); AVCHD recording on the VIXIA mini X shoots at a focal length of approximately 17.5mm. There is also a centered 1920 x 1440 image available for close-up shots, which shoots at 35.0mm for videos and 32.1mm for photos (35mm equivalent).

Without Powered IS

Canon’s sophisticated SuperRange Optical Image Stabilizer corrects shake instantly, so even handheld video taken at long focal lengths is sharp and steady. Dynamic SuperRange OIS takes shake correction to a whole new level. It provides continuous adjustment through the entire zoom range to correct an even broader range of motion. Extra compensation is applied at wide-angle focal lengths to help eliminate unwanted vibration. The improved Dynamic Mode, featured on the VIXIA HF G30 and select VIXIA HF R Series camcorders, adds electronic correction of the three "roll" axes. Together with the left-right and up-down axes correction of the OIS System, these camcorders have five-axis correction, which helps ensure smooth, distortion-free video, even while walking. Additionally, Powered IS provides an even higher level of compensation for subtle hand movement at the telephoto end, so video is steady across the zoom range.

Intelligent IS

Intelligent IS makes it easy to shoot clear, sharply focused video, even in situations that typically cause camera shake. The Intelligent IS system analyzes the shooting situation for you, then automatically switches to the image stabilization method best able to produce sharp, steady video. There are four IS systems that cover the range of shooting situations.
