Why is it Necessary to Use a Device Type when printing in SAP?

SAP's printing sub-system bypasses the device driver and generates the PCL/PS data independently. To add the device control options to the PCL/PS data stream, we must use the Device Type.

I am currently an SAP customer, how do I download the standard Device Types that are available to me?

Standard Device Types and Device Type Extensions for legacy models released prior to 2009 are available on Canon U.S.A. website (www.usa.canon.com) in the Drivers & Software section and are directly supported by Canon. Supported devices are listed in the Features section and in the SAP Supported Device List, available under Brochures & Manuals section.

Supported devices are listed in the SAP Supported Device List, available under Brochrues & Manuals section. Why does Canon offer two Device Type solutions - the Standard and the Extended?

Initially, the standard Device Types were developed by SAP and offered basic feature functionality such as input tray, duplex/simplex, paper size, orientation, and copies. The extended Device Types were developed by Canon Inc. to offer additional functionality such as staple, hole punch and output bin selection. Then the Device Type functionalities were combined and are available in one zip file as Standard Device Type available in Canon U.S.A websites.

Simply, extended Device Types are for older models and are still available on this website for download. These devices are listed in the Features section and in the SAP Supported Device List, available under Brochures & Manuals section.
